Information Manual (S15)

INFORMATION AVAILABLE WITHOUT RECOURSE TO THE FOI ACT

Like most public bodies, the Office of the Ombudsman has always made information in relation to its functions and activities available to the public. This information will continue to be available informally without the need to use the FOI Act. There is a considerable amount of such information available from the Office of the Ombudsman:

- The Ombudsman submits an Annual Report to the Oireachtas on his activities during the year. This report is available from the Government Publications Sales Office and may also be accessed on the internet at http://www.irlgov.ie/ombudsman. The Annual Report is also available through the County Libraries and Citizen Information Centres. It is made available to the national and provincial media when it is being submitted to the Oireachtas.
- The Ombudsman produces other reports from time to time, including some investigation reports, which are available to the public.
- Information leaflets are published which are distributed to the public in a number of ways.
- The Ombudsman and his staff frequently address voluntary and community bodies, visit schools and other outlets where information on the work of the Office is made available.
- The Office website at http://www.irlgov.ie/ombudsman gives information on the Office, its organisation, structure, areas of responsibility and on how to make a complaint. In addition, it contains a summary of the text of the Ombudsman Act, speeches, press releases and some other publications ( in addition to the Annual Report.)
- Information on the Office is also provided to those who make direct enquiries whether in person, in writing or by telephone.
- The Office has also produced staff guidelines on procedures for handling complaints including liaison arrangements with the bodies which come within the jurisdiction of the Ombudsman.
